In an era of government bailouts for those who can’t pay their bills, it is very easy to fall prey to the victim mentality. In sports it is amazing to see how many players perceive themselves as a victim of some sort of great injustice. This mentality not only is a negative state of mind, but it suppresses one’s ability to do great things and can lead to a perpetual state of being a “victim.” Every crisis provides an opportunity to do something great. Shane Henry had a crisis as a football player at Missouri Southern; he was not playing! Shane wanted to be on the field. If Shane perceived himself as a victim he could sulk and lament as to how the coaches were out to get him; instead, he turned this crisis into an opportunity by training his butt off in order to be a terror on the field next year. Shane felt faster throughout training and much more explosive, but he has not been timed yet so I cannot give quantitative data as to his improved speed and explosiveness. Prior to football season, Shane tested a 395 squat, 315 bench and 440 deadlift for one rep maxes. Now at the end of the season 12 weeks later he squats 450 for 2 reps, bench presses 340, and deadlifts 510. Shane made great improvements during football, and this will pay off for him next season. Here again is a man with a clear cut vision, who takes action towards his goals. It was an honor to train you, Shane, keep up the great work.

I wanted to congratulate one of my online personal training clients, Evan Chandler. Twelve weeks ago Evan had a bench press of 225, squat of 330, deadlift of 395, and a military press of 125. After 12 weeks of training, Evan just retested and hit a 275 lb. bench press, 375 lb. squat, 450 lb. deadlift and 160 lb. military press. All lifts were raw so equipment inflation was not a factor. He did this as a college student working full time at a bakery. Evan was focused, disciplined, and followed all instructions to a tee. It is a pleasure to work with such a dedicated, disciplined, and coachable athlete.
