 I
can say, in all honesty, psyching up means the
difference between PR’s and bomb-outs. To psyche myself
up, I listen to music before I lift. I am not talking elevator music; I'm talking about
"time to get crazy, violent state of mind" kind of
music. I usually prefer to listen to heavy metal or hard
rock, but I also listen to “Gangsta Rap” and country singers such as
Hank Williams Jr. and David Allan Coe. Listening
to music gets me in the right frame of mind.
However, with that said, I sometimes like to train in
silence. It really
comes down to personal preference and state of mind.
It is
a must to visualize yourself completing your
attempts days before the meet and between attempts
at the actual meet. I think of myself like a time bomb – just
ready to explode! I just say to myself, “EXPLODE,
EXPLODE, EXPLODE”. Powerlifting is not
slow; it is an explosive sport.
It’s about EXPLOSION.
THINK SPEED!!
While thinking all these thoughts and visualizing, I
sniff ammonia prior to lifts. My favorite type of ammonia
is Nose Tork. I take one
last sniff, let out a grunt, and it’s time to
have my way with some iron.
.."Powerlifting is
an extreme sport. The mentally weak will
have absolutely no success"..
